After the Battle of Mohacs in 1526, Suleiman's armies occupied Pecs and transformed it into a true Ottoman city -- Christian churches were converted into mosques, Turkish baths and minarets were built, Quran schools were founded, and bazaars replaced the markets. For a hundred years, Pecs was an island of peace. Visit the Mosque of Pasha Qasim the Victorious on Szechenyi Square, where the crescent moon of Islam remains visible on the cupola. Explore the Tomb of Idris Baba and the Yakovari Hasan Pasha Mosque, which dates from the mid-1500s and still functions as an active mosque today. Pecs is the richest town in Hungary for Turkish architecture. Free afternoon for shopping and leisure. Dinner and overnight in Budapest.
