The Discovery of the Islamic Soul and Heritage of Islamic Portugal / Gharb Al Andalus

7 Days 6 Nights

TOUR OVERVIEW

World Islamic Heritage takes you back throughout history to discover the secret spiritual Islamic heritage of Gharb Al Andalus, Islamic Portugal. This 7-day spiritual heritage tour explores the rich Islamic legacy across Portugal, from the grand mosques and Moorish castles of Lisbon and Sintra, through the ancient Islamic kingdoms of Silves, Tavira, and Mertola in the Algarve, uncovering over 500 years of Muslim history, architecture, and culture that shaped this westernmost land of Al Andalus.

Day 1: Lisbon Airport - Lisbon

Halal Half-board

After arrival at Lisbon International Airport we start our journey through the beautiful scenery of Lisbon with a panoramic tour of the city including the Alfama and Baixa districts. We visit the grand Mosque and Islamic Center of Lisbon for prayers and a meet and greet with the local community. We then explore the story of how Islam entered Portugal through the great Muslim conquerors Sayiduna Tariq Ibnu Ziyad and Sayiduna Musa Ibnu Nussair. We enjoy a panoramic stop viewing the Muslim Castle atop the mountain overlooking Lisbon - Castelo de Sao Jorge / The Emirs Palace, first built in the 6th century and used as a residence for the Muslim Emir royal family. Lisbon, known as Lisabona by the Moors, came under Muslim rule in 714 AD and lasted almost 500 years. We visit the city highlights including Pracio del Comercio, Torre de Belem, and Arco Triunfal da Rua Augusta, as well as the largest Mosque of Portugal and the first Mosque in the Iberian Peninsula after the fall of Granada in 1492. Dinner and overnight in Lisbon.

Day 2: Lisbon - Sintra - Cascais - Lisbon

Halal Half-board

After breakfast, we transfer to the beautiful Moorish mountain city of Sintra. The city's rich Islamic heritage made it one of the greatest cities in the western world during medieval times. We visit the millennium-old Moorish Castle, founded under Islamic rule, which occupied a strategic position for defending the surrounding territory and maritime access routes to Lisbon. The Muslims lived here almost 500 years from 714 through to 1147. We explore the Islamic Quarter, the archaeological sites, and the Historical Interpretation Centre of the Moorish Castle, installed in the Church of Sao Pedro de Canaferrim, most probably built on the foundations of a Muslim Mosque. In 1995, UNESCO classified the Sintra Cultural Landscape as World Heritage with the Moorish Castle as a fundamental component. In the afternoon we depart to the beautiful coastal city of Cascais for a panoramic tour of Marina de Cascais, Fortaleza da Cidadela, and Boca do Inferno, with free time for shopping. Overnight and dinner in Lisbon.

Day 3: Lisbon - Silves - Sagres - Tavira

Halal Half-board

After breakfast, panoramic tour through the beautiful southwestern landscapes of South Portugal and the Algarve, known as Ard Al Burtuqal, the land of the Oranges. We visit the Islamic Kingdom of Silves and the Islamic Kingdom of Tavira, once two great Islamic authorities in southern Portugal during the Islamic reign, also known as Gharb Al Andalus. The Muslim rule in the Algarve lasted for more than 500 years (711-1250). The Muslims introduced almond trees, carob trees, fig trees, pomegranates and the first orange trees to the region. The Arabs also gave the Algarve its name: Al-Gharb, meaning 'the west'. We visit the well-preserved Muslim fortification castle of Silves, capital of the medieval Muslim kingdom. Afterwards we continue to Sagres, the most western point of Western Europe, with breathtaking natural Atlantic panoramic views. Overnight and dinner in Tavira surroundings.

Day 4: Tavira - Faro - Tavira

Halal Half-board

After breakfast we visit the coastal village of Faro with its gleaming Muslim Moorish-style white houses and minaret-like chimneys cascading down to the Atlantic waters. We explore the town's Muslim Moorish charm, its labyrinthine narrow streets and structures with an oriental aura. Afterwards we continue our discovery tour to Tavira, where beneath the old 16th-century Convento da Graca, excavations uncovered a cobbled street and foundations of a dozen homes built more than 700 years ago by the Arab Muslims. We visit the small museum under the hotel bar with walkways above the medieval Moorish neighborhood remains. We explore the Alcazar royal palace ruins of the Emir Palace of Tavira, the old historical main central Mosque of Tavira (converted to a church during the inquisition), and Pego do Inferno, a small lagoon with green Mediterranean water. Free afternoon for shopping and leisure. Overnight and dinner in Tavira surroundings.

Day 5: Tavira - Loule - Lagos - Albufeira - Tavira

Halal Half-board

After breakfast we visit the coastal Islamic heritage villages of Loule, Lagos, and Albufeira. In Loule, we explore the gleaming Muslim Moorish-style city with its white houses, minaret-like chimneys, ancient Mosques, and Muslim Baths (Hamam) prayer washing rooms. We also visit a traditional market to experience how heritage lives on in the character and social behavior of the Muslim descendants. We continue to Lagos, a breathtaking Atlantic sea village once famous as a transit hub for the slave trade, now a picturesque fishing town and tourist capital of the Algarve. We then visit Albufeira, in Arabic Albuheira, one of the last cities to fall to the Portuguese Reconquista, which has retained much of its original charm. The Muslim silhouettes of Albufeira seen from its upper heights have inspired painters, photographers, and poets. This city was the capital of southern Portugal during the Muslim Moorish era. Free afternoon for shopping and leisure. Overnight and dinner in Tavira surroundings.

Day 6: Tavira - Mertola - Lisbon

Halal Half-board

After breakfast we start our discovery tour of the Islamic Kingdom City of Mertola, one of the least populated municipalities of Portugal, sitting atop a hill above the Guadiana river. We visit the former masjid, a rectangular white building with Roman foundations whose main architectural layout is retained from its time as a mosque built in the mid 8th and 9th centuries. It remained as a mosque for approximately 500 years, and even when converted into a church, the Mihrab was not destroyed. We explore the horseshoe arched doorways typical of Moorish architecture and visit the dedicated museum on Islamic art, housing locally unearthed artefacts such as pottery, jewellery and funerary stones with Arabic inscriptions. We visit the Alcacova (Alcazaba) and the replica of the Almohad Neighbourhood showing how people lived during the Muslim period. The Islamic heritage in Portugal left decisive marks on the country's development, from architecture to town planning, toponymy, language, culture and legends. Afterwards we transfer to Lisbon for prayers, a meet and greet with the local Muslim community, and dinner at the Grand Islamic Center of Portugal. Overnight in Lisbon.
