He was an Arab Muslim Sufi scholar and spiritual master who studied the Quran and Islamic sciences, traveled to spiritual centers in the Middle East, and became a respected teacher and model of piety and devotion in Tunisia. After his death in 1231, Sidi Bou Said was buried in the village that later took his name — a hilltop town overlooking the Gulf of Tunis. A sanctuary and mausoleum (zaouia) was built in his honor; it became a center for spiritual gatherings, Quranic recitation, mystical study, and Sufi dhikr. Overnight in Tunis.
